This is your fastest answer. A How2Recycle label tells you if and how an item recycles. A BPI or CMA logo confirms it is certified compostable. A resin code (the number inside the recycling triangle) tells you the plastic type, though the triangle alone does not guarantee your local program accepts it. When a certification is present, trust it over your gut.

  • Run the fingernail wax test

For paper cups and plates, drag your fingernail across the surface. If a waxy film flakes off, the item is wax-coated. Wax-coated paper can be composted but not recycled, because the wax clogs the pulping machinery. If nothing flakes and the paper is plain and matte, it is very likely compostable.

  • Check for a plastic lining

Many hot cups, cartons, and containers have a thin poly (plastic) coating to keep liquid in. This is the sneaky one. Poly-coated paper often cannot be recycled and cannot be composted in a standard facility, because the plastic will not break down. Look at the rim and inside surface. A slight shine or a peelable film is the giveaway. If the lining is a certified compostable bioplastic like PLA, it composts industrially, so the label should say so.
